Sphere Recommendations
NOTE: The sphere letters below are hyperlinked to our Sphere Hub which lists all available spheres sorted by effect!A Spheres: mBRV spheres as that's what his negative BRV mechanic is based off of. Bartz sphere is great for him for this reason (20% mBRV). ATK & mBRV (10%) spheres are next best. For those worried about the break condition, he only has to trigger the effect and lower enemy BRV as low as possible in the 3T window as enemies will stay at their lowest BRV while in negative BRV and Bartz allows the higher peak.
Note: If pairing with Cor, Cor may steal Breaks from Jack.
How To Play Notes
His new mechanic (Negative BRV) comes from his EX (and BT) buff allowing Jack to lower enemy BRV below 0 in the BREAK state.
What does this mean?
Enemies with Negative BRV are still considered broken so you get all those benefits and attacks that only deal BRV damage will effect their BRV.
However, being tied to the break state, enemies that recover from break on attacks or simply after 5 field turns will unbreak naturally meaning Jack Garland has to send them to the shadow realm once again. This also means allies that unBREAK/reBREAK will also pull enemies out of their negative BRV which may or may not be what you want.
Spinning Slash (S1) is his AoE option of 3 HP attacks.
Highbringer (S2) is his ST option of 3 HP attacks.
Both base skills will refresh his Cyclic Warrior effect that enables his Soul Burst follow up.
Soul Burst+ is his selfish follow up that takes enemies further into negative BRV and deals 2 regular, ST hp attacks and throws in another HP attack based on the target's Negative BRV value and is affected by Force Time (Think Sherlotta's Chuck Staff).
That final HP attack can reach 1M damage (999,999 same thing) with enough negative BRV on the target and HP DMG up effects on Jack Garland.
Lightbringer (EX) besides doing a lot more damage gives Jack a 2T buff that enables him to send enemies into Negative BRV normally.
Zantetsuken (LD) gives Jack his LD buff to improve Soul Burst into Soul Burst+ (described earlier).
Soul of Chaos (BT) grants Jack a good BT effect for setting up BT finisher into BT phase. On top of good stat boosts, it will also deal True HP Damage (as in not affected by Force Time) based on each enemy's respective negative BRV value each time that enemy is attacked. This damage is not limited by Jack Garland's normal HP DMG limit either. He will also gain a buff (so make sure he has room for it) that will replace Lightbringer for 6T (his EX buff) as it's a better version.
His Burst rotation is very simple as you'll use a skill depending on how many targets and finish with EX and FR. Just make sure to alternate targets if there are more than one.
S1/S2 -> S1/S2 -> S1/S2 -> S1/S2 -> EX -> FR -> Finish
Jack Garland supports himself so well, we advise running him with a linked attacker even more as he doesn't need the support and the linked attacker can also keep triggering his BT effect's True Damage!
Thirst for Chaos (FR) is his DLC move with Emperor but we get it for free. His Force Time Effect boosts party's BRV DMG Limit and asks for:
Melee BRV DMG on turn (20%)
Our turn passes while target is broken (20%)
Our turn passes while target has negative BRV (30%)
The last 2 conditions can be really useful later on as non-attacking moves (supercharging) can trigger the 50% for meeting those conditions on top of 50% non-attacking moves get in Force Time (if the character using it is FE 30)
Team Synergy and Notes
Jack Garland is a very strong damage dealer with a new niche of negative BRV. Negative BRV isn't super gamebreaking, but it does enable Jack a ton as his 1M HP attack is reliant on it and his BT effect lets everyone take advantage of it so fights that cannot be broken hinder him a ton. They're not very common, but they will show up so keep an eye out!
As mentioned earlier, Jack Garland enables himself (especially his BRV DMG) a ton by himself so unless bosses heavily debuff ATK somehow, he'll probably deal a ton of BRV DMG and drag enemies into Negative BRV easily.
As usual for damage dealers with strong Burst Phases, linked attackers and some form of Launch Support (Selphie ally/friend unit or Raines LDCA) are highly advised.
Note about his artifacts as it keeps coming up. His negative BRV is entirely based on his mBRV stat (not HP DMG Limit) so he wants 330/c50 as it gives him the most. Why not Break Boost Up/c50? because the raw mBRV will scale higher the more mBRV buffs/auras boost it.
Also note the difference between mBRV +330 and Break Boost Up is 2-3K with no other interference and scales up from there. Not the end of the world as long as theres SOME mBRV investment.
