Sphere Recommendations
NOTE: The sphere letters below are hyperlinked to our Sphere Hub which lists all available spheres sorted by effect!A Sphere - Prioritize ATK & BRV DMG, plenty of options, click the link to see our sphere hub.
B Sphere - Without a way to lock enemies on or guarantee HP damage taken, options are very limited. Kimahri is probably the best choice since it helps mildly to keep him healthy. Otherwise Celes is fine.
C Sphere - Specifically Alphinaud sphere is best for him. Everything else is extremely mediocre.
How-To-Play Notes
It can’t be overstated that you should always check the Enemies tab before the battle and look for non-dark elemental attacks. Leon won’t necessarily be locked out, but his utility in battle to protect the team will be significantly reduced. Also look out for attacks that are BRV gain into HP attack. Leon can’t protect as much from those, but he does have -30% HP DMG for the party.
Always open with Dark Stream, Leon’s EX, which is fully charged at quest start. This gives him his EX buff, which is one of the most uniquely powerful in the game. As this recharges in 2 skill uses, Leon can spam skills and has good longevity. This also drops Dark Resist Down, allowing Leon to generally hit for weakness damage.
Next, you can choose to use Leon’s LD, Dark Erosion, if you like. He starts with his LD buff, but his debuff trap needs to be applied. The debuff is great because it boosts BRV DMG that the enemies take, and also gives a trap effect to BRV shave and attack bosses after their turn. You’ll want to prioritize maintaining his buff, and ensuring that his debuff is applied always toward the end of the fight when you need BRV DMG boosts most.
Dark Slash is just a single target BRV shave attack with splash. Very filler, best with high BRV in your pool
Dark Bind is far from filler. It’s his primary way of shaving multiple enemies, and it heals himself. Overheals go to the party which is extremely nice. Leon’s skills get downgraded if he drops under 50% HP, and this is your go-to skill to heal back up in a pinch. This also drops Sap on all enemies, though maintaining this debuff is less critical.
Before you think that his AA, Dark Enchant, is useless because all of his skills are already dark - note that enchanting an element will power up attacks generally for BRV DMG +20% that share that element! It also gives him a bit more oomf to his BRV attacks making his attacks and traps hit that much harder.
Team Synergy Notes
Watch out for huge BRV gain reductions. The BRV gain reductions hurt a bit of his utility, as the team won’t generate much battery on enemy turns. All isn’t lost though, his trap triggers after the enemy turn no matter what they do.
Leon's utility goes down if you lock enemies down with silence type effects, since their attacks won't battery your party. (Eald'narche, Arciela, Kefka...)
Celes herself has a magic BRV Absorb from her Runic buff, however it's limited to magic BRV only (for now). Leon can help her absorb BRV which will come in REALLY HANDY later
Removable Passives
NOTE: Passives should generally only be removed if you lack CP space. There are very rare occasions where a character has a bad passive that disrupts their optimal gameplay.Attack Proficiency (this unfortunately can’t ever be triggered, so it’s useless)
BRV Attack+ BRV Attack++ Up (never used, even if he didn’t have a BRV+++ from LD)
HP Attack+ HP Attack++ Up (never used as LD upgrades to HP+++)
BRV Attack+++ HP Attack+++ (just because there are 3 +’s doesn’t mean you should use it… but you will need this in longer quests certainly)
