Sphere Recommendations
A Spheres - Focus ATK & BRV DMG as usual. Avoid those that boost just a type of damage, since he is mixed kit (like Melee ATK up, won’t help half of his kit). He hits weakness damage consistently, so that’s a viable trigger for your sphere as well.
D Sphere - The ATK aura spheres listed at the top are certainly the best (except Wakka’s)
How-To-Play Notes
ITS BEEN ALMOST 3 YEARS SINCE HIS LAST BASE KIT REWORK! ONION KNIGHT FANS REJOICE!
Open up with Blizzard Combo (S1) or Multi-Hit (S2), usually it’s S1 to get the AoE damage flowing but you can S2 for buffs as well. Your EX will be charged right away after that.
Blizzard Combo (S1) is tied to his Sage Mode, and is geared toward dealing AoE damage. This mode doesn’t have a speed boost, so is ideal when wanting to maintain his auras to the party.
Multi-hit (S2) is tied to his Ninja Mode, and is geared toward dealing single target damage and going fast. There’s no capability in this mode to shave multiple targets at once, so be mindful of that. This mode is also incredibly fast, so he’ll burn through buffs and his own BT/AA effects if you aren’t careful.
When shifting from Ninja to Sage, he tends to do an unpredictable turn jump backwards since he’s losing the huge speed boost from his Ninja buff. Similarly, he can jump up the turn order list from Sage to Ninja.
His EX is different depending on his current mode. Meteorite (Sage EX) is the only tool outside of LD that he has to shave multiple targets, and is great damage against multiple targets. Blade Torrent is great against single targets, but don’t delay using your EX just to change mode ever. The EX charges incredibly fast so go nuts!
Sword & Sorcery (LD) should be used to maintain his special effect primarily, but you can also use it earlier if you need a free use of his Blizzard Enchant All upcoming. When party ice enchant is needed, you should specifically use your free skill uses on AA. Sword & Sorcery can also help push in tight situations as you pull up allies to act right after OK.
Spellbook (or Ninjitsue) offer his BT effect which is quite strong and flexible as you can focus on Magic or Physical teams and provide solid party auras. However, in Ninja mode he risks burning through this effect very quickly.
Harmonious Light to Clear Dark Clouds (FR and a mouthful) is a simple FR as it asks for:
Acting after an allied turn (40%)
Ice attacks (20%, 30% for OK himself)
Since his FR pulls up allies and enchants ice to everyone, it's very straightforward and comfy 60% on ally turns and 70% on his own.
